He was the oldest offspring of Jonathan Dancy, a philosophy professor, and his significant other Sarah Dancy, an academic publishing professional. Dancy's parents delivered him off to the Dragon School of Oxford for his developmental years, then at 13, he entered Winchester College. Dancy depicted himself as an insubordinate youth. Subsequent to moving on from Oxford University with a degree in English writing and dialect, he sought after acting full-time while bartending to pay the bills.

After graduation in 1998, Dancy moved to London, where a chance discussion in a cafe led to his meeting casting director Ros Hubbard and agent Dallas Smith. They signed him to the role of Danny in a BBC adaption of George Eliot's novel, Daniel Deronda.
