Lieutenant Bill Boyle was a Memphis Police Department lieutenant who, along with fellow MPD officer Sergeant Pembry, was in charge with guarding Dr Hannibal Lecter while he was in Memphis. The two men had their own routine when dealing with Lecter, but both not as careful as Barney. One evening, while delivering Lecter his evening meal, they handcuffed Lecter to the bars of his cell. Lecter escaped using a home made key and attacked the two officers. Boyle was handcuffed to Lecter's table leg, and Pembry bitten and maced. Lecter then used a police baton to beat Boyle to death. When backup arrived, they found Boyle strung up on the bars of Lecter's cell, having been disemboweled.
